Arts and aesthetics in a globalising world

This conference will investigate art and aesthetics in their widest senses and experiences, from a variety of perspectives and in numerous contexts: the material arts, crafts, performance, bodies, digital and new media, metaphysics, and other related themes. Moving beyond art as expressions of the inner mind and inventions of the individual self, the conference will bridge the gap between changing perceptions of contemporary art and aesthetics, and map the impact of globalisation on the creation and movement of artworks, people’s changing perceptions of the medium, the shifting skills of artists, the relationship between the arts and declining ecological factors, art and new religions, and so forth. The Textile Society of America invites paper proposals for its upcoming symposium, Textiles & Politics, to be held in Washington, D.C. September 19-22, 2012. We seek presentations from all textile-related disciplines and interdisciplinary areas, including but not limited to anthropology, art, art history, conservation, cultural geography, design, economics, ethnic studies, history, linguistics, marketing, mathematics, political science, and theater. TSA encourages both organized sessions and individual papers from scholars, researchers, artists, gallery and museum professionals, and others from around the world. Symposium proceedings will be published early in 2013.

The Eighth Annual Public Anthropology Conference

Join us for a conference that examines and uncovers various systems of power. New paradigms of praxis must be about more than making power visible. Our challenge in this conference, then, is to both locate and redefine power. We invite academic and professional anthropologists, social scientists, activists, public health professionals, filmmakers and educators to join us in this inquiry into power. We welcome panels, papers, and skill workshops drawing upon some of the following frameworks for challenging power – critical race studies, interrogations of the nonprofit industrial complex, anti-displacement, critical animal studies, environmental justice, education reform and policy, disability studies, activism-based research, and performance and queer studies – but we invite papers of all types and from all social justice movements.

Call for papers

Hong Kong and Asian Cinema: Creativity and Culture in an Era of Globalization

This meeting of the Asian Cinema Studies Society welcomes paper, poster, workshop and panel proposals covering all aspects of Asian film and media. Although proposals related to the conference theme of Hong Kong and Asian cinema in the era of globalization may be given priority, proposals on all aspects of Asian film and media are welcome.

Please send proposals of 200-300 words as RTF or WORD attachments to Dr. Natalie Wong at siulamwong@gmail.com. For all proposals, be certain to include the title, author(s) name(s), institutional affiliation, mailing address, and email contacts, as well as a brief biography of each contributor. For panel, workshop, and group submissions, be certain to provide a brief description (100 words) of the contribution of each participant. Sessions will be 1 1/2 hours in duration, and time limits will be strictly enforced.

Samdhong Rinpoche, Tibetan Prime Minister in Exile

by Samdhong Rinpoche, Tibetan Prime Minister in Exile

A distinguished scholar and leading Tibetan public intellectual, Professor Samdhong Rinpoche has served as the first elected Tibetan Prime Minister in Exile from 2001 to 2011. He was professor of Tibetan studies and director of the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies in Varanasi, India, from 1971-1988. In 1990, he was a member of the Drafting Committee Constitution of the Future Polity of Tibet and Law for the exiled Tibetans. From 1991 to 1995 he was appointed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as one of the deputies of the Assembly of Tibetan People’s Deputies and was later unanimously elected as its Chairman. Samdhong Rinpoche was born in eastern Tibet in 1939. He received his Geshe Lharampa degree in 1968 and his Ngarimpa degree in 1969.

Methods and language opportunity in the Andes

Climate and Culture Change in the Andes: August 2011
When: August 4th – 24th

The Center for Social Well Being is now in its 10th year offering our 3 week training program in interdisciplinary qualitative field methods, as well as Spanish and Quechua language classes, in the Peruvian Andes. The combined undergraduate and graduate level seminar is held at the center’s rural base, an adobe lodge on an ecological ranch in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range of the Callejón de Huaylas, 7 hours northeast of Lima. Coursework provides in-depth orientation to theory and practice in field investigation that emphasizes methods in Participatory Action Research and Andean Ethnography centered on themes of Climate Change with respect to Ecology, Health, Education, Community Organization and related topics.

Students have the opportunity to actively engage in ongoing investigations in local agricultural communities to develop effective field research techniques, and to acquire language skills. In addition, the program provides excursions to museums, archaeological sites, glacial lakes and hotsprings; optional recreational activities include hiking, mountain biking, rafting, kayaking, rock climbing and trekking.

Total cost is $3,200 US dollars. This includes all in-country travel, food and accommodations at the rural center, and course materials. The program is under the direction of Applied Medical Anthropologist, Patricia J. Hammer, Ph.D., and Ecologist, Flor de María Barreto Tosi.

Student paper contest in linguistic anthropology

The Society for Linguistic Anthropology is conducting a student essay competition for the best undergraduate paper in linguistic anthropology.

The deadline for the undergraduate contest is July 30.

The SLA will award a cash prize of $500, as well as $300 in travel reimbursement for the prize winner, in order to help ensure that they’ll be able to attend the AAA conference and accept their prize in person.

The paper must be an original work based on original research conducted by the author. It will be evaluated on the basis of its clarity, significance to the field, and substantive contribution.
